Arsenal on Friday, July 22 announced the signing of Ukraine international Oleksandr Zinchenko on a long-term contract from Premier League champions Manchester City. Zinchenko is set for a reunion with Mikel Arteta after the pair worked together when the Arsenal manager was Pep Guardiola’s deputy at City.
Financial details were not disclosed but Arsenal would pay 30 million pounds ($36.05 million) up front with two million pounds in add-ons for the 25-year-old defender, according to Sky Sports.
Zinchenko had been an influential player for Manchester City, having played more than 100 matches in all competitions. He won 4 Premier League titles at City, 4 League Cups and an FA Cup title during his tenure at the Etihad Stadium.
Zinchenko becomes Arsenal’s second recruit from City in the close season after Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus, and their fifth signing overall after winger Marquinhos, goalkeeper Matt Turner and attacking midfielder Fabio Vieira.
Zinchenko, who is a midfielder on international duty, was deployed as a left-back by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. However, he fell out of the radar after Joao Cancelo was preferred on the left side of the defence in the recent past at City.
Arsenal boss Arteta highlighted that Zinchenko will give versatility in attack and defence to Arsenal, highlighting the multiple roles the Ukrainian can play.
“Alex is a high-quality player who will give us options and versatility. It’s not only about the positions he can play but as well, the versatility he will give us in attack and defence,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said.
‘EXCITED TO PLAY FOR ARSENAL’
Meanwhile, Zinchenko said he is excited to be playing for a club that he has enjoyed watching during the time of Thierry Henry and Cesc Fabregas.
“This is a boyhood dream come true because I was a massive fan when I was a kid,” Zinchenko said.
“Since Thierry Henry and young Cesc Fabregas was playing here, I was just enjoying watching those games, that Arsenal. And obviously, I started to love this club, so I am so excited and I cannot wait to play for this amazing club.”
