In a scathing attack on the ruling BJP, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday said democracy is dead and the country is under a dictatorship.
“We are witnessing the death of democracy. What India has built brick by brick, starting almost a century ago, is being destroyed in front of your eyes. Anybody who stands against this idea of onset of dictatorship is viciously attacked, jailed, arrested and beaten up,” he said.
Addressing a press conference against the backdrop of an Enforcement Directorate probe into the Congress-owned National Herald newspaper, Gandhi accused the BJP of using central agencies to silence those who question the government.
“The more I raise peoples’ issues and the more I attack the government, the more I will be targeted. I am happy, attack me,” he said.
The Gandhi scion’s remarks came days after the ED temporarily sealed the office of Young Indian company housed in the premises of the National Herald office as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation.
Shortly after the ED action, the road to the Congress headquarters was blocked by the Delhi Police.
Rahul Gandhi went on to say that the government is determined to not allow any kind of debate and discussion on pressing issues in Parliament.
“Idea is, people’s issues -whether price rise, unemployment, violence in society – must not be raised,” the Congress leader said, adding that the BJP-led government’s “sole agenda” is to protect the interests of a handful of people.
“They lie 24 hours a day. They will deny price rise, unemployment, incursions by China,” he said in a swipe at the Centre.
