BREAKING | Rahul Gandhi, Shashi Tharoor Detained During Congress Protest Against Inflation

Amid nationwide protest against rising prices and unemployment, Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi along with several MPs including Shashi Tharoor were detained by police at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi, news agency ANI reported.

Shortly before Rahul Gandhi was detained, the Gandhis were spotted leading protests inside the Parliament buildings, along with other party members.

In a video tweeted by the party, Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi was seen standing in parliament while her colleagues chanted anti-government chants against the GST (Goods and Services Tax) on food. Images showed Rahul Gandhi leading a march to the President’s residence.

Alleging that some MPs at protest were beaten by the police, Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi said, “All Congress MPs were marching towards Rashtrapati Bhawan to raise the issue of inflation & price rise but they are not allowing us to go ahead from here. Our job is to raise the issues of the people…Some MPs detained, also beaten.”

Earlier, at the conference held on Friday, Rahul Gandhi launched a ferocious attack on the Modi government. He said that the manner in which the Centre has unleashed central agencies against opposition demonstrates India is witnessing the “onset of dictatorship”.

Referring to PM Modi as “Hitler” Rahul Gandhi said: “Hitler had also won elections, he too used to win elections. How did he use to do it? He had control of all of Germany’s institutions…Give me the entire system, and then I will show you how elections are won.”

On Friday, Congress workers and officials launched a nationwide demonstration against rising prices, increases in GST on vital commodities, and unemployment.
