CWG 2022 Medal Tally: It was a good outing for India on Day 8 of the Commonwealth Games as the wrestling contingent brought in six medals as they kicked off their campaign in the quadrennial event. India’s medal tally after the conclusion of Day 8 stands at 26 medals and have taken the 5th spot in the overall CWG 2022 medal standings. India now has 9 Gold, 8 Silver and 9 Bronze to its name so far in the competition.

Grapplers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Deepak Punia won gold in their respective weight classes while Anshu Malik had to settle for a silver medal and Divya Kakran and Mohit Grewal earned a bronze medal each. 

Day 8, Results – India At CWG 2022

Star Indian shuttlers P V Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen registered easy wins to storm into the quarterfinals of singles events on Day 8 of CWG 2022.

India are assured of a second medal in the lawn bowls competition after the men’s fours team made its way into the final on Friday.

Ace Indian paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal put up a sensational show to progress to the semifinals of all his three events in the table tennis competition on Friday. The record nine-time national champion entered the men’s singles semifinals after beating Nigeria’s Olajide Omotayo 4-2 in a thrilling contest. Sharath also reached the semifinals of mixed and men’s doubles competition at the 2022 Birmingham Games.

Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Saurav Ghosal progressed to the semifinals of the mixed doubles event in squash competition while Velavan Senthil Kumar and Abhay Singh also had a good day in office as they scripted a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Scotland’s Douglas Kempsell and Alan Clyne to advance to the quarterfinals of men’s doubles event.

Meanwhile, it was a heartbreak for the Indian women’s hockey team as it lost 0-3 in the shoot-out to four-time champions Australia after both the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time in the semifinal of the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Star Indian sprinter Hima Das also failed to qualify for the final of the women’s 200m. The 22-year-old from Assam finished third in semifinal 2 with a timing of 23.42 seconds. Hima missed out on the final with the finest of margins as her timing was just 0.01 seconds off the qualifier. While the Indian men’s mixed 4x400m relay team are through to the finals.
