India’s Tokyo Olympics medalist Lovlina Borgohain suffered a shock exit in the women’s 70kg category boxing event at the Commonwealth Games. Lovlina, who won bronze at the Olympics a year ago, failed to go past the quarter-final in Birmingham on Wednesday, August 2.
Lovlina Borgohain lost to Wales’ Rosie Eccles via split decision 2-3 in the women’s 70kg category. Lovlina won the opening round 4-1 but she lost steam in the last two rounds as Eccles came up with a brave show, throwing punches at the much-fancied opponent.

Lovlina began on a dominant note in the red corner, swaying away from Eccles’s punches and landing a few of her own. However, the second round seemed to go in Eccles’s faovur but the judges gave it to the Indian boxer 3-2.
But the momentum was certainly slipping away from Lovlina as Eccles gave it her all in a do-or-die round to win the round 5-0.
Lovlina’s Commonwealth Games campaign ends in disappointment as she had a rocky lead-up after alleging harassment, saying her personal coach was denied accreditation to the Games Village in Birmingham. Lovlina eventually had her way as her personal coach was allowed to be with her during training at the Games Village.
Lovlina has had a difficult time since winning the Tokyo Olympics bronze.
