Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has invited his Telangana counterpart K Chandrashekar Rao for the 44th chess olympiad. The chess olympiad will be held in Chennai from July 28 to August 10, 2022.

CM Stalin sent the invitation to KCR through DMK MP R Girirajan on Friday. MP Girirajan honoured CM KCR with a shawl and presented the invitation letter.

KCR has already started consolidating the support of Opposition parties like TMC, SP, RJD and AAP in a bid to revive a political axis without the Congress and BJP. Now Stalin has sent a personal invitation to KCR, a move which is seen as an attempt to form a new southern political axis.

CM Stalin mentioned in his letter that the competition, in which chess players from 188 countries are participating, is being held for the first time in India and for the third time in Asia.

Meanwhile, CM Stalin also chaired a review meeting at the secretariat to review security arrangements and to review the measures in place to receive international chess players arriving at the Chennai airport.

The chess olympiad is a biennial team event in which teams from some 190 countries compete over a two-week period. It was supposed to take place in Moscow from 26 July to 8 August.

The last chess event of such stature to come to India was the 2013 world championship clash between Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen, the current world No 1.
