Sukhpreet Kaur, Wife Of Sarabjit Singh Who Died In Pakistan Jail, Killed In Accident


Sukhpreet Kaur, the wife of Sarabjit Singh who was killed in a Pakistan jail in 2013, died in an accident in Punjab’s Amritsar on Monday, IANS reported. Kaur was travelling on a two-wheeler when she fell from it at Fatehpur village near Amritsar, police said.

She was rushed to the hospital but eventually succumbed to injuries. Sukhpreet’s last rites will be performed at her village Bhikhiwind on Tuesday.

The development comes just three months after Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur, who had launched the ‘Save Sarabjit’ campaign to free her brother from Pakistan jail, died following a heart attack.

Dalbir Kaur was already suffering from lung infection for the past one year.

Sarabjit Singh had crossed over to Pakistan in an inebriated condition in 1990. He was a resident of Bhikhiwind.

Singh was sentenced to death in Pakistan for his alleged implication in a bomb blast case on a fake identity of Manjit Singh. The court had directed to hang Sarabjit Singh on April 1, 2008, but owing to international pressure, his execution was postponed indefinitely.

However, Singh, then 49, died following an attack on him in Kot Lakhpat Rai Jail by the inmates in April 2013.

Dalbir Kaur had visited the Kot Lakhpat Rai Jail in Lahore twice along with her family members, including two daughters and wife of Sarbjit Singh. During the 22 years Singh had been in prison, Dalbir Kaur had fought against the system to release her brother.

After his death, Sarabjit’s body was brought from Lahore to Amritsar, where his last rites were held.

The life of Sarabjit Singh was also subject of a biopic which was released in 2016.

In the movie, the role of Dalbir Kaur was portrayed by actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Richa Chadda essayed the role of Sarbjit’s wife.
