New Delhi: Sooraj Barjatya’s recent film ‘Uunchai’ has been making quite a mark at the box office. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Danny Denzongpa, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Sarika and Parineeti Chopra has been receiving glowing word-of-mouth reviews. Sooraj Barjatya has also directed ‘Humke Aapke Hain Koun’, the 1994 film which broke many box office records worldwide earning Rs. 250 crores. It was the highest grossing Indian film back then, and held the title for about 15 years. Now, in an interaction, Sooraj Barjatya revealed that many people had walked out of the premiere of ‘Hum Aapke Hai Koun’.

In an interview with The Indian Express, Sooraj Barjatya said, “Maine Pyaar Kiya was a surprise box office hit while Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! didn’t take off well. We had huge expectations, but the film took off only after four days.” He added that experience taught him the importance of leaving everything to the audience. In the same interview, Mr. Barjatya said, “I learnt it very early with Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! because I thought I had made the greatest film, but when we had the premiere people weren’t liking it! I clearly remember the audience walking out with every song! I thought I had made a good but then I started wondering, ‘Ye kya hogaya’ (what has happened).”

Like ‘Hum Aapke Hai Koun’, Sooraj Barjatya’s recent release ‘Uunchai’ has begun doing really well. Initially released on a limited number of screens, ‘Uunchai’ has gathered momentum thanks to word-of-mouth reviews.

‘Uunchai’ is a film about four friends who have known each other through the prime of their lives and now have their backs in old age as well. When one of them dies, the other three try to fulfill his last wish of taking a trek to the Everest Base Camp to see the mountains he so loved in his life.
