  • Shami and Bumrah picked up 9 wickets in the 1st ODI
  • Bumrah became the Player of the Match after he picked up 6 wickets
  • India beat England by 10 wickets at The Oval

Former batter Virender Sehwag lauded Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah for bowling their hearts out in India’s first ODI against England at the Kennington Oval in London. On Tuesday, July 12, the duo picked up nine wickets as the Men in Blue bowled their opposition out for a paltry score of 110 in 25.2 overs.

Bumrah started wreaking havoc after he got rid of Jason Roy and Joe Root in the same over. Both Root and Roy failed to open their accounts. Bumrah also accounted for the wickets of Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone, who both failed to disturb the scorers much.

Bumrah picked up his maiden ODI six-wicket haul after he also dismissed Brydon Carse and David Willey. Shami, on the other hand, accounted for the wickets of Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Craig Overton. Sehwag reckoned that Bumrah and Shami are a class apart from the other fast bowlers.

Sehwag took to Twitter and wrote, “One day cricket or Test cricket, no better pair in world cricket. Bumrah and Shami are a class apart.,”

After the match, Bumrah, who won the Player of the Match award, said that bowlers don’t need to put in much effort if the conditions are in their favour.

“When there is swing to offer and seam movement, it is exciting times for white-ball cricket. Very happy when there was some help for us in the beginning. When I bowled the first ball, I saw some swing… If there is no swing, you pull your length back. When the ball is doing something, you don’t have to try too much. But when the wicket is flat, your accuracy is tested,” Bumrah was quoted as saying.
